Google shows mostly pre-2000, well advertised, big staff, and big corporation sites in search results. Mostly the same old, often stale sites are shown, sites that editorially only go so far and no farther. This site is about the opposite of what is shown in search results. The vast majority of those who return to this Site use a bookmark since using Google Search to find it is more difficult to do. Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal may Fight for Their Fifth Rings in 2010, but Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade are Destined for More Rings

I realized the other day that despite there being a number of great independent basketball sites and despite there being a number of very large Corporate sports sites, there was no where on the internet where you can quickly find out how many Championship rings have been won by players. So this week, Quest for the Ring rescued the Internet from that poverty with four separate Reports, giving you that capability in many different formats and sorts.

Aside from rescuing the Internet and the basketball world from that glaring oversight (and reminding George Karl for the umpteenth time that the 3-point shot is here to stay) why did we do this? We previously stated one important reason: players who have won the Ring are more likely to win more Rings, all other things equal.

And the more Rings a player has won, the more his "theoretically exact" Real Player Rating (RPR) is higher than his calculated by Quest RPR. I like this rule of thumb:

AMOUNTS TO ADD TO A PLAYERS' REAL PLAYER RATING FOR RINGS WON
One Ring: .040
Two Rings: .070
Three Rings: .090
Four Rings: .100
Five Rings: .110
Six Rings: .120
Add .010 for each additional Ring.

So for example, since Kobe Bryant has won four Rings, you had better, if you want to know his real theoretical value, in your mind add .100 to Bryant's RPR whenever you see his latest RPR.

BEYOND REAL PLAYER RATING
RPR is all about actual, real performance. But RPR was designed, more than anything else, so that managers, coaches, and fans could see the real value of players, so that they can then determine correct playing times and correct trades and so forth.

RPR by itself is more useful for coaches managing a team in games than it is for managers determining trades and acquisitions. RPR is still a crucial thing for those managers, but they have to look at other things as well to be able to make the right trades and the right acquisitions. Although RPR may be the great majority or vast majority of what is needed for managers to evaluate the "real player value" (RPV) there are some other factors that would be needed:

SOME FACTORS NEEDED BY MANAGERS BESIDES RPR TO DETERMINE REAL VALUE OF PLAYERS (RPV)
1. Number of Rings won
2. Number of Playoff series won
3. Injury History
4. Age
5. Quality of teams played for during career
6. Variability of RPR, if variability exceeds the norm.
(These were in no particular order.)

Remember, before you even think of calling any of this unimportant, these players are being paid millions per year, and Rings are hanging in the balance. So these things are more important than the average Joe might think.

In the months and years to come, we will be working on RPV, although since RPR will comprise roughly 70% of RPV, and since some of the RPV factors are relatively easy to gauge "on the fly," given the dozens of other things we want to do, it will probably be a little later than a little sooner before RPV is actually born.

For right now we'll settle for looking at one of the factors in the future RPV: the number of rings won. The following is a complete list of all current NBA players who have won one or more rings, ranked by the total number of minutes they played during seasons when they won a Ring, with both the number of rings and the number of minutes limited to where the player played at least 1200 minutes, which works out to just shy of one quarter per game, which is 12 minutes long.

A few weeks ago, Kobe Bryant of the Lakers tied Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan for most number of Rings won by active players: four Rings. Since the Suns (what in the hell are they doing now for God's sakes?) traded O'Neal to the Cavaliers, and since the most likely 2010 NBA final is Cavaliers-Lakers, the number of rings will be an interesting subplot of this coming season. If that is the Championship series, it will be Kobe Bryant versus Shaquille O'Neal in the battle for who will be the King of the NBA in terms of number of rings won.

YOUNG AND MID-AGE PLAYERS WHO HAVE ALREAY WON A RING WHO ARE MOST LIKELY TO WIN MORE RINGS
If you really know basketball and details about the players on this list, its not difficult to estimate who on this list is most likely to increase their Ring totals in the years ahead:

Pau Gasol [RPR: 1.000]
One of the three historically great Lakers (along with Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom, and the young Andrew Bynum is about ready to join the club) this 29 years old, seven foot Center-Power Forward is cool as a cucumber and definitely fulfills the need for serious Quest contenders to have a top notch Center who is both a great defender and either a great finisher or a great shooter, preferably both.

Dwyane Wade [RPR: 1.295]
This 27 year old Miami Heat combo guard ruined owner Marc Cuban's Ring dream in 2006 by combining with Shaquille O'Neal to defeat Dirk Nowitzki (0 Rings) and the Dallas Mavericks. This high energy relentless scoring machine would be handed an extra ring for sheer talent and persistence if that were allowed. As he himself realizes, all he needs is at least one great or at least two really good centers / power forwards, and he is all set to go for Ring #2.

Lamar Odom [RPR: .923]
This 6'10" Los Angeles Lakers power forward turns 30 this November. Odom represents about what scientists would make if they wanted to make the perfect player and they could in the lab put any combination of genes together they wanted. Odom combines a substantial amount of the great majority of the physical and athletic characteristics needed to win NBA playoff games. The most outstanding specific thing to note is that Odom does all three of the most crucial things you want a power forward to do: (a)defend intensely but skillfully, (b)be able to finish very well, and (c)when the lane is clogged or the clock is running out, be able to knock down mid-range jumpers and even some threes. That the Lakers have Odom is living proof that their managers are some serious basketball people who don't fool around when it comes to winning Rings, because Odom is a Ring machine if there ever was one.

Rajon Rondo [RPR: .938]
If Odom is a Ring Machine up front, Rondo is seemingly a backcourt Ring Machine. Just 23 years old and just 6'1" tall, he has quickly become one of the best half dozen point guards in the NBA. But more than that, his shooting percentage is off the charts for a point guard, and his hustle factor and will to win are at least close to being off the charts as well. That Rondo's Boston Celtics were even in the Series with the Magic this spring, let alone taking it to seven games, despite being without Historical Superstar Kevin Garnett, shows you right there that Rondo has to be among the players most likely to win more Rings.

Andrew Bynum [RPR: .940]
Yet another Laker Center-Power Forward, Bynum is just 22 this October, is 7 foot tall, and has the perfect body for basketball along with superb athletic talent. Bynum has noticed that Coach Phil Jackson doesn't give him full credit for all of his abilities, which is a good thing; it shows you that Bynum understands the different components that go into winning playoff games. Roughly speaking, think of Bynum as the front court version of Rondo: a very young player who has "more Rings coming" written all over his bball shoes. But whereas Rondo is a hustler and a clever devil, Bynum is more of a very powerful and very athletic machine, which is exactly the way its supposed to break down between the front court players who can win Rings and guards who can win them.

If you get any of these players on your team, I can guarantee you are instantly at least a long shot contender to win the Quest, and you could be instantly the next level up, a "wildcard contender". You are probably a major contender (there are three by rule) if you have any two of these kinds of players (including players with zero rings but having the right stuff to start getting them).

EXACTLY HOW MANY SUPERSTARS DOES IT TAKE?
First, here is what we are talking about; here are the three types of superstars as defined by RPR:
Major Historical Superstar: 1.100 and higher
Historical Superstar: 1.000 to 1.099
Superstar: .900 to .999

Generally, to be a major contender to win the Quest, you must start with one of the following:

1. A Major Historical Superstar and some damn good coaching if that's the only Superstar you have.

2. Two Historical Superstars

3. One Historical Superstar and two Superstars

4. Three Superstars

Although it is difficult for a team to get any one of these superstar combinations, this is more or less the mimumum requirement to be able to have a truly good shot at winning a Ring. No one said this stuff was easy.

Is it possible to be a major contender, or even to win the Quest without meeting any of these qualifying Superstar requirements? Yes, but the odds are fairly strongly against you, even if you have outstanding coaching, outstanding defense, outstanding hustle, outstanding whatever.

So always remember: the real skill level of players is at or very near the top of the mountain when it comes to winning the Quest.

Don't forget too that, due to the so-called crowding out factor, the "perfectly measured in a vacuum" Real Player Ratings of many of the players on the best teams are about 10% higher than the already very high actual RPRs that you see.

Players Ranked by Number of Championships and Rings Won 1980-2009

PREVIOUS REPORTS CLOSELY RELATED TO THIS ONE
Already reported out are the players of all Championship teams 1980-1994 and 1995-2009.

In this Report you can find two alphabetical lists of all players who won the Quest for the Ring between 1980 and 2009, with an entry for each time each player won. Each entry consists of (1)The name of the player (2)the player's team (3)the age of the player when he won and (4)the number of minutes he played during the season he won the Quest. See the roster logs referenced and linked to at the top of this Report if you need to know the year(s) the player won.

Obviously, that is the Report to use to look up any player by name. But also in that one, you can quickly tell how many rings each player has won, simply by observing how many times (in a row) his name appears. The alphabetical sorting is by first name.

THIS REPORT RIGHT HERE
What's in the present Report below are the following goodies:

--Players ranked according to number of rings won among all Quest winners who played at least 300 minutes in the year(s) they won, for the 30 years 1980-2009.
--Players ranked according to number of rings won among all Quest winners who played
at least 1200 minutes in one year(s) they won, for the 30 years 1980-2009.
--Players ranked according to the total number of minutes they played during all years they won the Quest, among all Quest winners who played at least 300 minutes, for the 30 years 1980-2009.
--Players ranked according to the total number of minutes they played during all years they won the Quest, among all Quest winners who played at least 1200 minutes, for the 30 years 1980-2009.

In summary, the first two are the straight up number of rings won during 1980-2009 by all players who played at least 300 minutes and then 1200 minutes. The other two rank players according to the total number of minutes they played in years they won the Quest, first for the 300+ minutes players and then for the 1200+ minutes players.

Alphabetic Listings of Players who won the Ring Between 1980 and 2009

Already reported out is the players of all Championship teams 1980-1994 and 1995-2009.

Now we need to compile those lists into number of rings won ranking lists. We are doing that in two ways and in two reports.

What's in this Report is introduced shortly. What is in the other Report, the next and final report in this series, are these 4 rankings:

The other two ranks players according to the total number of minutes they played in years they won the Quest, first for the 300+ minutes players and then for the 1200+ minutes players.
Again, these four rankings are all in a soon to be posted Report.

In this Report we are doing two alphabetical lists of all players who won the Quest for the Ring between 1980 and 2009, with an entry for each time each player won. Each entry consists of (1)The name of the player (2)the player's team (3)the age of the player when he won and (4)the number of minutes he played during the season he won the Quest. See the roster logs referenced and linked to at the top of this Report if you need to know the year(s) the player won.

Minutes played is obviously a pretty good approximation of how good the player was. But rembember, as the Real Player Rating system shows clearly, the players with the most minutes are not always actually the best players.

Obviously, this is the Report to use to look up any player by name. Also, you can quickly tell how many rings each player has won, simply by observing how many times his name appears. The alphabetical sorting is by first name.

Players who won the Quest for the Ring 1980-1994

This is the second of two Reports listing all of the Quest winners during the 30 years that the NBA has had the 3-point shot. (No George Karl, the three is not just a passing fad, so get with the program, laugh out loud.) The first report has a complete introduction of this important presentation, as well as the Quest winners from 1995 to 2009. This report has only the 1980-1994 Quest winners, so for the introduction, you have to go to the other one.

The next report will show every Quest winner during the 30 years ranked by number of rings won.

(In both Reports) there are two listings: the complete list of all Champions who played at least 300 minutes, and a separate list showing only the starters and heavy minutes non-starters (1200 minutes or more).

The format in each list is player/age/minutes played. The sorting order is minutes played. Remember that as the Real Player Rating system makes clear, in some cases players who have played fewer minutes may have been better players than those who played more.

Players who won the Quest for the Ring 1995-2009

Shame on you, basketball internet people. I have at least three dozen current basketball things I could be doing other than the following history Report, but you people don't really respect NBA Champions the way you think you do. Because no where on the internet (at least no where that has any traffic to speak of) can you see who the NBA Champions actually are at a glance, in one place! Even on monster statistical sites there is no page to go to listing NBA player champions year by year, or the number of rings won by player. Sure, you find a short list of players who have won three or more rings drifting around, but forget about a complete list. Until now.

So it was left for Quest to rise to the call of duty to do this crucial historical reporting. ("Well if you think its so all-fired important, than do it yourself." "Alright, damn it, I will", laugh out loud.)

It may be crucial history, but its also crucial for the present, because players who have already won rings are, all other things equal, more valuable than players who have never won a ring. You might as well add at least .050 to each such player's Real Player Rating. So a .700 becomes at least a .750, an .870 becomes at least a .920, and so forth.

Quest for the Ring presents the following complete list of NBA Champions by year and by team. There are actually two listings.

The first one lists by year and by team all players who played for at least 300 minutes, which is only about 1/10 of the minutes played by the top stars. Anyone who played less than 300 minutes really didn't win a Championship if you know what I am saying. The other listing lists all players who played for at least 1200 minutes, which is a little bit less than a quarter per game. This many minutes is the dividing line between starters and very important off the bench players on the one hand and much less important players on the other hand. So this second listing is strictly limited to those players who were the most significant in winning the Quest.

There have been 30 Quest winners in the "modern era," the era since the 3-point shot went into effect in 1979-80. Three decades have come and gone since the NBA finally allowed 3 points to be counted for long range shots. (Where does the time go?) We are posting the NBA Champions in two postings of 15 years each. After the 30 years have been posted, we will give you the total number of modern era rings won by player in a separate Report.

This Report shows you 1995-2009 Quest winners, and the other one to follow shows you the 1980-1994 winners of the Quest. Remember, for both 15-year periods there are two listings: the complete list of all Champions who played at least 300 minutes, and a separate list showing only the starters and heavy minutes non-starters (1200 minutes or more).

The format in each list is player/age/minutes played. The sorting order is minutes played. Remember that as the Real Player Rating system makes clear, in some cases players who have played fewer minutes may have been better players than those who played more.

The Allen Iverson Situation as of August 2, 2009

Anyone who has ever had doubts about the legitimacy of basketball, due for example to perceived inconsistent foul calling from game to game, puts some of that aside when a player like Allen Iverson comes along. Iverson has always, just as he claims, "Played every game as if it’s his last". Iverson goes out there and fights for every game regardless of whether the referees are doing so.

So as a perfectionist you can say that basketball is not perfect or even close to perfect due to inconsistent foul calling, but as a human you have to like and respect basketball due to players such as Allen Iverson.

Now here we are 13 years after Iverson came into the NBA and just a few short years before he is inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame yet the "what have you done for me lately" crowd has joined the Iverson haters crowd in trying to ransack Iverson's rep.

This is really a dumb thing to do, although I guess you can get away with it at the moment because you never know, Iverson might commit a horrible crime and never be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Or the world might end before he can be in the Hall of Fame.

Seriously though, Quest has proven that Iverson's main problem is that he has been playing the wrong position for most of his 13 NBA seasons. To oversimplify and make a long story short, Iverson's tendencies to take too many shots was made worse when Larry Brown switched him from 1-Guard (Point Guard) to 2-Guard about 11 years ago. Ever since then, fools have been, either literally or more commonly in effect, criticizing Iverson for not being a good Point Guard when he has not been assigned the position.

Here is a post I made on an Iverson-hating forum back in March.

(Note, although in the fall of 2008 I promised I wouldn't do it any more, this past spring I was again guilty of posting on forums without posting here at the same time. During August, I will be digging that material up and posting it here. I have reissued my pledge not to do that anymore and this time, the rules have real teeth.)

On Iverson at the Iverson-hating forum, March 2009:

Over and over again at this forum there is the logical inconsistency of everyone blaming losses of Nuggets games last year and Pistons games this year on Iverson not being a good point guard (PG) yet Iverson has not been assigned the position for most of his NBA career. Believe it or not, on the full scale Pistons forum, the Pistons' unexpected losses this year are mostly not blamed on Iverson, because on that forum, it is understood that Stuckey is the designated point guard backed up by Will Bynum and Arron Afflalo. Whereas Iverson is a 2-guard, along with Rip.

It's basically just as goofy to blame Iverson for any Pistons PG problems as it would be to blame Rip Hamilton. I know for a fact that few here support the idea of Iverson being designated the PG, so for anyone who does not support AI to be designated PG to blame him for not being a good PG when he is not designated that is, to repeat, goofy.

During February, the Pistons were 3-9. If you visit this topic, you can see that one of the big and probably the biggest reason for that was that Stuckey fell off a cliff and ended up on the border between poor and very poor. Stuckey was the PG problem for the Pistons during the big losing streak, Iverson had almost nothing to do with it, unless you want to argue that Iverson should be the PG and was crowding out Stuckey. In that case, it would be the fault of Iverson coaches, not the fault of Iverson himself.

An experienced coach would have played Will Bynum more and Stuckey less during Stuckey's huge slump, but that did not happen, which cost the Pistons at least a couple of February wins.

During February, Iverson was leading the Pistons and was a little distance into the star range.

So, laugh out loud how Iverson gets blamed for everything on this board and yet, how much do you want to bet that few if any Iverson haters will subscribe to the theory that the underlying problem is that Iverson has been playing the wrong position for many years.

Fast forward to now, and we have Oly Sander, one of only three pro basketball writers I have discovered so far (out of dozens) who I think are good enough to warrant continually checking out. The other day Sander came up with five possible reasons why free agent Iverson has not been picked up quickly by another team, in other words, as he says, "Why Iverson is not the Answer".

How cute by the way, I wish I could think of cute expressions like that sometimes. So let's check out his five theories and see if there is anything to them.

1.Iverson is no longer a star. Last season’s debacle in Detroit proved he’s more a blending player; an off-the bench scorer or complimentary piece. Problem is Iverson doesn’t share this sentiment and wants first option minutes, touches, and shots.

No, this is wrong. Iverson is still a star. He would make a good starter for at least 20 teams. It is correct to say though that he apparently is not a superstar anymore, which would be no surprise if he has been playing the wrong position for the better part of 13 years.

With regard to the starting thing, on the one hand, it’s true that Iverson wants to start and will play for the Grizzlies or Clippers to get to do so. How many Hall of Fame players are happy to come off the bench and play 10 or 15 minutes during their last few years, and how many would rather just retire and save themselves that? Either choice is correct; if Iverson can't start anywhere and he can't accept that, then he should retire, and there would be nothing wrong with that decision if that's how it played out.

Ok, #1 is wrong. Let's go to #2:

2. Money matters. Iverson wants decent dollars because he equates his contract with respect. For instance, he believes taking the veteran’s minimum means he’s a journeyman. This is incorrect. There’s nothing wrong with taking less for the right situation, especially when you’ve had two’ max’ contracts.

Not much to say here because there isn't much here that could explain the Iverson mess. Iverson is a millionaire; he doesn't need any more money. He quit the 2009 Pistons when they became the most depressing team in the NBA thanks to GM Joe Dumars, fired Coach Michael Curry, the gross inconsistency of PG Rodney Stuckey, and the decisions of Rasheed Wallace and apparently Tayshaun Prince to pack it in rather than to continue to compete all out.

So #2 is much more wrong than right. Let's proceed to #3:

3. Unfortunately, playing time and money are scarce for this year’s free agent crop. Coaches don’t have to guarantee minutes or roles and GMs don’t have to back-up the brinks trucks or give out extended terms. Iverson’s demands are unrealistic in the current market.

Um, playing time is not affected by a recession or a depression. Thank goodness the NBA doesn't reduce games to 40 minutes for the recession, they are already too short already, laugh out loud.

Money is not scarce either. The salary cap, which is close to 60 million dollars per team, has been reduced by a grand total of about one million dollars, which hardly means money is scarce. Why should Iverson be the one player who takes a huge cut in pay just because of the recession/depression caused by, oh, I better not get into that. This is another dream of the Iverson haters, that Iverson play for the pay of the average basketball player.

I don't know exactly what Iverson's demands are, but if he would rather get something in between a minimum and a maximum contract and start for a team like the Grizzlies rather than get a minimum veteran contract and come off the bench for a much better team, that is his choice. I'd say in fact that the Grizzlies thing would be the better choice, since Iverson's ability to help win a Championship has been impaired by his playing the wrong position for many of his 13 NBA years.

OK, so #3 is wrong. Whew, we are starting to run out of possibilities. Let's keep our fingers crossed and move on to #4:

4. Last year in Detroit was a disaster. When healthy, he struggled. His tendency to dominate the ball didn`t jive with the collectivist Pistons and led to GM Joe Dumars giving him the golden handshake to stay on the injured list. Other teams are leery of adding such a situation.

Notice that the writer goes from "Detroit was a disaster" to "He struggled". This is a clever way to get the reader to think that Iverson was the cause of the Detroit disaster without saying it. In other words, this is a way for the writer to stay on the good side of the large number of Iverson haters out there, without making a statement that could easily be proven incorrect, and that would look goofy to anyone who knows, for example, that most of the starting Pistons played worse in 2008-09 than they did the year before, and who knows that the Coach has been fired for incompetence, and, well, you get the point.

Very clever, he wants to have it both ways: he wants to be friends with both the Iverson haters and with those who look at the forest instead of just the trees. So this is just the writer trying to be friends with just about everybody at the same time.

For the record, there is no evidence that Joe Dumars conspired to make sure Iverson would not play in the latter part of the season. I mean, I just wrote a Report on how Dumars has seriously messed up the Pistons, but forbidding Iverson to play using a false injury routine was NOT one of Dumars' mistakes.

The most likely thing that happened is that Iverson essentially quit the Pistons. I mean, he was quoted just before he stopped playing for them that he didn't want to play in a limited off the bench role (less than 20 minutes per game). It would be kind of odd if that statement was not related to him subsequently not playing for them, don't you think?

So this reason is all goofy and doesn't hold any water.

Now its nail biting time, because we are down to just one possibility left, reason #5:

5. When convenient, the NBA has used hip hop as a marketing tool. When inconvenient, the NBA has shamefully distanced itself from anything hip hop. Right now, is one of those distancing times, so Iverson, the original face of Slam Mag`, isn`t a marketing draw.

Oh my God, a cultural / economics point. You seldom see this type of thing anywhere but at Quest.

Well, I had my fingers crossed, but this one is not correct either. First, Iverson himself is a lot less hip-hop than he was years ago. He even got rid of his corn rows this past season, a hair style closely associated with the hip hop community. So just as the NBA has become less hip hop than it was roughly a decade ago, Iverson has as well.

As to whether Iverson is not a marketing draw, that's actually true for some markets. For example, the Denver Nuggets traded for Iverson not because they were serious about winning a Championship, but because the owner and/or his advisors thought that Iverson would make him and his franchise some good money. But Denver was never a hip-hop town, and hip-hop was nationally going through a relative stagnation at that time, so the Nuggets ended up with neither a Championship appearance nor any extra money due to Iverson to speak of.

On the other hand, Memphis and Los Angeles, the former due more to intensity and the latter due more to sheer population, are still major hip hop markets, so Iverson playing for either the Grizzlies or the Clippers would make them a substantial chunk of money they would not get otherwise.

Damn, all five reasons come up lacking. The Quest for the Ring theory remains the only good one. Let me spell it out: Iverson is not wanted by hardly anyone because he has been playing the wrong position for most of his 13 years in the NBA. He is a point guard who needs to be reminded all the time to share the ball. In other words, he has been coached incorrectly for many of the years, with Larry Brown being the worst offender.

If you were a manager, would you want a player who has been playing the wrong position for most of his career? No, you wouldn't.

The bottom line is that Oly Sander is one of the very best pro basketball writers out there, and I agree with a lot of what he writes. But he is at least as much in the dark about Iverson as are the Iverson haters, maybe more so actually.

And now you see why Quest has spent so much time on the Iverson thing and why we will be completing the Special Report series and continuing to follow the Iverson saga? Because the vast majority do not understand what is going on, but we do.

GIVE US THE JUICE TO PRODUCE REPORTS MORE QUICKLY

Although there is a guaranteed minimum rate of Report production regardless of traffic, IT IS IN YOUR POWER to help double or triple the number of and frequency of Reports. Simply take two or three minutes as often as you can to recommend Quest and post links to Quest on your favorite sports and other sites. The resulting automatic increase of traffic will in turn increase the resources that go in to producing Quest, which in turn speeds up reporting. If you want, e-mail how you helped (include the url of where you posted a link to Quest) and we will throw some Internet love back to where you tell us on the Internet. Thank you.

Here are some quick links that you can use to find a place where you might post a link to Quest and/or to Quest content.

BASKETBALL SITES THAT ARE OPEN FOR CONTENT FROM ANYONE
Note: Beware of "layered" sites. None of the following are layered sites, which are sites that allow contributions from the public only in hard to find, low traffic areas, while the main areas are off limits for public input and are only for a chosen few. All of the following have at least some notable traffic, and all of them allow relatively equal and open participation. The order is from most recommended to least recommended, based on about half a dozen factors.

MESSAGE BOARDS AT HUGE COROPORATIONS
The Fox NBA board is very low traffic, and the MSNBC NBA board doesn't exist anymore. The CBS Sports NBA Message Board is a layered site; you can NOT post topics nor expect to be considered seriously there until you have spent a few years posting there. We do not recommend CBS Sports. So the only real, fully open NBA forum hosted by a big corporation is the ESPN message board. Be forewarned though that the ESPN board is dominated by very young fans who make very short comments. On the other hand, it is a high traffic site, so we won't stop you from posting a Quest link at ESPN if you want to.

TWO WAYS TO LOOK AT HOW LONG QUEST FOR THE RING HAS BEEN KEEPING IT REAL

The above shows you in two different ways the exact amount of time since The Quest for the Ring began to completely explain how the Quest is won, while having as much fun as possible at the expense of basketball pretenders and player haters. The first panel shows how long it has been in each of seven units. The second panel shows how long it has been in the more usual "remainder" way.

QUEST FOR THE RING SOMETIMES GOES INTO HIATUS
Regardless of any temporary unavoidable absences, the Quest is in this project to explain in detail for the very long term--indefinitely, for many, many, many years ahead. At this writing we have the equivalent of 15 basketball books under our belt and we plan on doing dozens more. Count on us being right where basketball is at, which is here, actually.

QUEST REPORTS #41 TO #60, GOING BACK IN TIME

QUEST IS FREE BUT ABOUT 3 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME CAN GET YOU MORE OF IT

Although there is a guaranteed minimum rate of Report production regardless of traffic, it is in your power to help increase the number of and frequency of Quest Reports. All Quest sites are developed and produced according to both superseding criteria and site traffic. Like all sites started in recent years, Quest receives very little help from Google and other search engines. The search engines mostly serve to keep the older, popular sites popular; they preserve the same old, same old status quo.

The amount of reporting and the frequency of Quest Reports could easily be double what it is were site traffic higher. If Quest obtained the traffic we know it deserves, than production would go from the equivalent of roughly three books about basketball a year to at least five and to as many as six books a year!

WE NEED A GRAND TOTAL OF ABOUT 3 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME
Please take three or four minutes every now and then to recommend Quest and post links to Quest on your favorite sports and other sites. In other words, wherever possible use us to back up what you are posting and writing. The resulting automatic increase of traffic will in turn increase the resources that go in to producing Quest home page Reports. After helping us, feel free to e-mail how you helped and we will throw some Internet love back to your Internet hangout. The email address is thequestforthering1. QUEST REPORTS #61 TO #80, GOING BACK IN TIME

WORD IS BOND

WELCOME TO THE QUEST--THINGS ARE VERY DIFFERENT HERE

WELCOME TO THE QUEST FOR THE RING, ALSO KNOWN AS THE REAL ZONE
This is one of the most serious basketball sites on the internet, focusing on how and why playoff games and NBA Championships are won. We also love to take comedy and music breaks, but not every day.

WELCOME TO THE QUEST FOR THE RING. YOU HAVE LEFT THE HYPE ZONE AND HAVE ARRIVED IN THE REAL ZONE. Please check any rose colored glasses at the door. The Hype Zone is where you can find out about the personalities and the styles and how popular they are and what they are up to lately. The Real Zone is where we DO NOT think personalities and styles and how popular or unpopular they are things to waste time on just for ratings or traffic.

Instead of hype, here we post as much truth about how NBA playoff games and Championships are won as we can 365 days a year and at at any hour of the day or night. Please have a productive visit, and a nice trip back to the Hype Zone when your visit is over.

A SMALL SAMPLE OF CURRENT AND SOON TO COME QUEST FOR THE RING REAL ZONE TOPICS
--How and Why the 2010 Los Angeles Lakers, the 2010 Cleveland Cavaliers, and the 2010 Boston Celtics Win or Lose in the 2010 Playoffs
--The right "amount of" LeBron James
--How players we know deserve to win a first or second Ring can get one, highly talented players such as Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, Rajon Rondo, and Dwyane Wade.
--How and why the Denver Nuggets Franchise has repeatedly fooled the public, and possibly themselves for that matter. (No, we still have not completely finished with the Nuggets, thanks to how successful they were in 2008-09, albeit there was no chance of a Championship; Continuing, much done already)
--How and why much of what you may think you know about Allen Iverson is dead wrong (Continuing, much done already)
--How and why the playoffs are something completely different from the regular season, and why your team may be simply not prepared for them despite a lot of regular season wins

A SMALL SAMPLE OF ALREADY COMPLETED QUEST FOR THE RING REAL ZONE TOPICS
--How and why Carmelo Anthony has been downsized due to a quest for "well-roundedness," and why this is really bad
--How and why the owner of the Nuggets shortchanged and cheated his team out of a possible Championship
--How and why being physical alone can not win you a Championship
--How and why the Nuggets' high fouling defense will take them only so far
--How and why George Karl is doing more harm than good with respect to J.R. Smith
--How and why George Karl's obsession with personalities is wrong and bad for any team
--How and why George Karl and the Nuggets can not win in the playoffs (2007, 2008) or a West final (2009). If Quest commits a foul, we own up to it, as we do right here: we thought the Nuggets could not win in the playoffs in 2009. They did win 10 games before being eliminated by the Lakers in the West final, so in response we corrected our evaluation of what you can do with the Nuggets' unique 2009 approach to basketball without, however, going overboard.
--How and why George Karl cheats the fans and the franchise out of performance and development of "reserve" players
--How and why playmaking is so important, probably more than you think, and how you manage playmakers correctly.
--How and why you have probably been fooled regarding the Nuggets' 2008 off-season and their 2008-09 defense

UNIQUE SITE DESIGN
The Quest is organized in a completely different way from what you are used to on the internet. We have combined the best features of the blog and the conventional web site formats, the latter being the norm for large organizations. However, since we do not like the idea of using flash to "wow" visitors, we do not use flash except within video and other discrete components. So we are state of the art in terms of expanding the power of visitors to get exactly what they want very quickly, but we do not have the latest flash gadgetry just to "keep up with the Joneses". More broadly, you will find that Quest for the Ring never seeks to keep up with the Joneses, simply because the Joneses never had the nerve and the intelligence to do what we do.

2009: A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION COMES TO QUEST
Just before the 2009-10 season tipped, the very large number of features and links to important resources were strategically reorganized and placed within an easy to use and clearly labelled section system. So ended the era of the rapidly developed, sprawling and slightly disorganized Quest, and so began the era of the big but under careful control and extremely well organized and professional Quest for the Ring.

The Quest Home Page consists of numerous types of content, organized carefully into the new sections as of November 2009. Features can be any educational and / or entertaining thing you can think of, including everything from music players to videos to photos to breaking NBA news readers to top teams performance breakdown pages.

Quest for the Ring has a world class link system for those who know what they are looking for and wish to find and engage the appropriate link, But the Quest visitor does not HAVE to hunt for links to have an intelligent and entertaining experience. The Quest home page is big enough and chock loaded enough that link hunting is not absolutely necessary the way it normally is at many other basketball sites.

THERE MUST BE TEN WAYS TO READ REPORTS [PAUL SIMON LOL]
There are close to ten ways to find out about, select, and read Quest Reports! The standard, traditional blog presentation is available as one of the many ways to choose, access, and read reports. On the Home Page, only one report loads in the traditional format in order to keep this page as quick loading as possible.
See the "Total Freedom of Navigation" section for complete details about how to find, choose, and read reports.

One key place to find Older Reports is on sequentially numbered url's thequestforthering2.blogspot.com, thequestforthering3.blogspot.com, and so forth.

THE QUEST USER GUIDE VERSUS an about page
Other sites most often have undeveloped and limited in scope "about pages" which is usually all they have for what we call a "User Guide". Our User Guide material is a vast improvement, quantitatively and qualitatively, over a mere "about page" While many other sites don't help their visitors to make the best use of the content, we do. Also, the User Guide is chock loaded with invitations to visitors to participate in all kinds of ways, including for example advertising for free, link exchange, and getting a team site supported by Quest.

AVERAGE RATINGS BY POSITION
Not all positions are created equal. These are the average ratings by position among all NBA players who play 300 minutes or more. There are very few small forwards and shooting guards who are superstars. Most (but definitely not all) superstars are players who can play point guard, power forward, or center.

Point Guard .750
Shooting Guard .640
Small Forward .640
Power Forward .720
Center .750
All Positions / All Players (NBA Overall Average) .700

PLAYOFF GRADE PLAYERS
Playoff Grade Players have ratings of .560 and higher. Players with ratings below .560 should not play in the playoffs unless the team is forced to play them so that they have two players at a position and/or so that the team has at least eight players playing in the playoffs and/or because the coach is absolutely certain the low rating player will play better in the playoffs than he did in the regular season.

REGULAR SEASON STARTING PLAYERS
All starters on all teams should have ratings of .575 and higher. If a team has no player at a postion with at least a .575 rating, then it is extremely deficient at that position due to injuries or due to management incompetence.

THE ALL IMPORTANT, AWARD WINNING REAL PLAYER RATINGS USER GUIDE
The above are a few hightlights from the User Guide for Real Player Ratings. For complete details regarding how the Real Player Ratings are designed, how and why they work, and how exactly you can use them, see the User Guide. The User Guide for Real Player Ratings is a necessary reference for anyone who wants to truly understand the value of, the validity of, and the ways you can use the Real Player Rating performance measures.
